Individuals wanting automatic awareness of where their time goes

Our take

RescueTime runs in the background and automatically categorizes time spent across apps and websites, which solves the fundamental problem with most time trackers: nobody remembers to start the timer. We think its real value is the weekly reports that surface uncomfortable truths about how much time actually goes to distraction versus focused work. It’s a personal awareness tool first, not a client-billing tool, so freelancers needing invoiced timesheets will still need something like Harvest alongside it. Focus session blocking is a genuinely useful bonus feature for chronic tab-switchers.

Key features

  • Fully automatic background time tracking
  • Weekly productivity reports and trends
  • FocusTime distraction-blocking sessions
  • Goal setting for app/site categories
  • Offline time tracking

What we like

  • Zero manual effort required to track time
  • Genuinely eye-opening weekly reports
  • Good distraction-blocking focus sessions
  • Works quietly in the background

What could be better

  • Not built for client billing or invoicing
  • Free tier heavily limited
  • Categorization sometimes needs manual correction
