ChatGPT
The default general-purpose AI assistant for writing, coding, and research
At a glance
General-purpose AI assistance across writing, coding, and research
Our take
ChatGPT is the tool that took generative AI from a research curiosity to something your coworkers use daily, and it remains the broadest general-purpose option — drafting, coding help, brainstorming, data analysis, and now voice and image generation in one app. We think its biggest strength is sheer breadth and the size of its plugin/GPT ecosystem, which means there’s usually a workaround for whatever you’re trying to do. Free tier access to GPT-5-class models has narrowed the gap with paid plans, though Plus subscribers still get materially higher usage limits and priority access to new features. It’s a strong generalist, not necessarily the best at any one specialized task.
